As part of a broader scientific, cultural and educational project dedicated to Guglielmo Marconi, which is supported by Comitato nazionale per le celebrazioni del 150° anniversario dalla sua nascita, Settore Musei Civici del Comune di Bologna has promoted a permanent contemporary installation project designed by the internationally renowned artist Susan Philipsz. She has been working with sound, radio and sound waves for years. For the celebrations, Philipsz created a sound installation called "Interval Signals", which has become part of the permanent collection of MAMbo - Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna. The work consists of recordings made by Philipsz on a vibraphone of a number of radio interval signals. In Philipsz's own words, a radio interval signal is "a short musical sequence that is usually played before the start or during breaks in radio broadcasts". The work is then broadcast live, 24 hours a day, via this website. This means that, no matter where in the world you are or what time it is, every listener will hear the same audio track.
The collaboration between MAMbo and NEU Radio – Nuova Emittente Urbana, has given rise to Interval Signals, a work that intertwines the historical and symbolic dimension of radio waves — Marconi's revolutionary invention — with their contemporary evolution as an immaterial vehicle of memory, connection and art.
